Ski lift workers fight for higher wages

Many would consider it a dream job to work on the ski lifts in a Swiss alpine resort, greeting skiers and making sure they have a safe ride. The truth is that it’s hard graft for low pay.

The mountain railway staff put in long hours to keep the slopes safe. Many receive as little as SFr12 ($13) per hour for 12 to 14 hour shifts. The Trade Union Federation is calling for a minimum wage of SFr22 ($24) per hour, to cope with the high cost of living. The transport staff union is currently trying to negotiate better conditions for ski lift workers. (SF/swissinfo.ch)
