Cancellara wins prologue of Tour of Spain
Bernese cyclist Fabian Cancellara has won the prologue of the Tour of Spain – the Vuelta – in a time of five minutes and 20 seconds.
He was nine seconds ahead of Belgian rider Tom Boonen and 12 seconds ahead of United States rider Tyler Farrar over the course of 4.8 km in Assen in the Netherlands.
Cancellara was first in this year’s Tour de France prologue over an individual 15 km individual time trial.
It was not until the seventh stage, the first true mountain stage, that Cancellara lost the yellow jersey.
The record for most Vuelta wins is held jointly by Switzerland’s Tony Rominger, who won three consecutive Vueltas in 1992, 1993 and 1994 and Roberto Heras of Spain, winner in 2000, 2003 and 2004.
