FC Zurich handed tough Champions League draw

Swiss football champions FC Zurich have drawn strong and attractive opposition in the group phase of the European Champions League.

The team will face AC Milan of Italy, Spain’s Real Madrid and Olympique Marseille of France. The first matches take place on September 15-16.

FC Zurich qualified for the group stage after Tuesday’s decider against FK Ventspils. They won 2-1 in the second leg in St Gallen after a 3-0 victory away in Latvia.

They are the fourth Swiss team after Grasshoppers of Zurich, FC Basel and FC Thun to have reached the group stages of the lucrative tournament.

In the play-offs for the new Uefa Europa League, FC Basel are through to the group stage of the competition, beating FK Baki of Azerbaijan at home on Wednesday 5-1 (8-2 aggregate).
