Federer makes Australian Open quarterfinals
Swiss tennis ace Roger Federer put on a stunning display to win against the Australian Bernard Tomic 6-4, 6-2, 6-2 in Melbourne on Sunday.
The world number three used deft drops, lobs, booming backhands to advance to the Australian Open quarterfinals for the eighth straight year.
The 19-year-old Tomic came into the match following an upset third-round win over 13th-seeded Alexandr Dolgopolov.
But four-time Australian champion Federer was having none of that before a packed house of 15,000 people at the Rod Laver Arena.
He stepped up his game when he needed to, breaking the Australian at 4-4 in the opening set and again to open the third.
“I thought I played a really good match,” said Federer, the winner of 16 Grand Slams. “I knew I had to. Anything else wouldn’t have done the job tonight.”
Federer will now meet 11th-seeded Argentine Juan Martin Del Potro in the quarterfinals.
