Gleckstein Hut to Kleine Scheidegg Pass (possible ascent of Wetterhorn 3,692m)
A normal ascent of the Wetterhorn begins at the Gleckstein Hut. Residents of Grindelwald consider the Wetterhorn "their" mountain.
It’s a four-to-six-hour traverse and climb from the hut. Sir Alfred Wills made a memorable ascent in 1854 (he mistakenly believed it was the first on the mountain).
With legendary guides from Grindelwald and Chamonix, the ascent marked the beginning of mountaineering’s golden age, and the rise of climbing as a fashionable sport.
The path from the Gleckstein Hut to the valley traces the lower reaches of the Upper Grindelwald Glacier before arriving at the road to Grindelwald. In the village, the party will take part in a church memorial service for the climbers and guides who have lost their lives in the Alps.
They will continue on to the Kleine Scheidegg Pass and the Hotel Bellevue-Des Alpes – a large inn that preceded the building of the railway. Accommodation has been available to travellers on the pass and the adjoining Wengern Alp since the late 18th century.
