Grasshoppers close in on St Gallen

Stéphane Chapuisat celebrates the first of his goals against Lausanne Keystone

Grasshoppers Zurich have climbed up to second in the Swiss football league's top division, level on points with the leaders St Gallen, after a convincing 4-0 win over Lausanne Sports.

Deputy goalkeeper Peter Jehle, standing in for the injured Philippe Huber, enjoyed another clean sheet, while Swiss international Stéphane Chapuisat scored his first brace of the championship round, with goals in the 25th and 37th minutes.

New Uruguayan signing Richard Nuñez grabbed his first goal for the Zurich club with substitute Andres Gerber scoring Grasshoppers’ fourth just moments after stepping onto the pitch.

Lausanne have dropped to fifth place in the table, behind Lugano and Basel who both leapt into the top half with wins over Servette and Sion on Saturday. St Gallen made sure of top spot for at least another week with a 1-0 home win against FC Zurich on Friday.
