Hingis breezes through to Heineken quarter finals
Switzerland's tennis number one, Martina Hingis, was showing good form in the Heineken Trophy tournament in the Netherlands, thrashing Canada's Jana Nejedly, 6-0 6-2, in just 36 minutes.
Hingis, who is preparing for the prestigious Wimbledon tournament starting next week, received a bye in the first round. Her compatriot, Patty Schnyder cruised past Slovakia’s Karina Habsudova also in straight sets, 6-0 6-4, in her first round match.
Switzerland’s Emmanuelle Gagliardi, on the other hand, found her luck was out, forfeiting her match aagainst Italy’s Rita Grandea because of a bad back.
Meanwhile, Swiss men’s tennis had mixed fortunes at the Nottingham Open in England. Marc Rosset beat Argentina’s Juan Ignacio Chela, 6-4 6-4, but his fellow Swiss, Roger Federer, was unlucky to lose to Australia’s Richard Fromberg, 7-5 6-1.
