Airline carries record number of passengers
Swiss International Airlines transported a record number of passengers in 2007, carrying 12.2 million people.
This was an increase of 13.2 per cent for the company, founded on the ashes of the former national carrier Swissair in 2002.
Now owned by German airline Lufthansa, Swiss saw its seat occupancy rate reach 80.2 per cent, compared with 79.8 per cent in 2006. The increase was registered both on intercontinental and European flights.
The company’s freight division, Swiss Worldcargo, saw its sales rise 8.2 per cent.
Lufthansa reported that it had transported 54.6 million passengers last year, up 5.6 per cent.
Basel-based Swiss saw its earnings take off 138.7 per cent in the first nine months of 2007, reaching SFr475 million ($429 million) on sales of SFr3.59 billion.
