Celebrating New Year on Lake Lucerne

Romantics and nostalgia buffs shouldn't pass up the chance to enjoy a four-course meal on a lovingly restored paddle steamer.
For the third year in a row, the paddle steamer Uri, which normally operates only in summer, has been put into service on Lake Lucerne between Christmas and New Year’s (December 25 to January 2).
The oldest working paddle steamer in Switzerland, it is celebrating a centenary of service.
Diners can choose between meat or vegetarian dishes (SFr60), fondue on December 28 and 29, or brunch on January 2. Traditional English cream tea will be served each day for those longing for the days when the British ruled the tourist roost in Switzerland.
A voyage on the Uri is also a journey into Swiss history. The boat passes several landmarks on the shores of Lake Lucerne including the Rütli meadow, where the Swiss confederation was born in 1291. There is also Tell’s Chapel and a monument to Schiller, the German writer who brought the story of William Tell to the world.
The steamboat connects with the cog railway stations for trips up to the summits of two of central Switzerland’s most famous peaks, Mount Rigi and Mount Pilatus.
