Free newspapers gobble up market share

The free daily newspapers continue to win new readers at the expense of the traditional press, latest market share figures show.

The circulation figures for September 2006 to September 2007 from the media research institute WEMF confirmed German-language free sheet 20 Minuten as the most read newspaper in Switzerland with 1.24 million readers.

In the French-speaking part of the country, the free newspapers 20 Minutes and Matin Bleu saw dramatic increases in readership of 41 per cent and 32 per cent respectively.

Of the paying dailies, the tabloid Blick remains in first position, despite a decline of 2.5 per cent. At the other end of the spectrum, the heavyweight Neue Zürcher Zeitung (NZZ) slipped below 300,000 readers.

Two new titles contributed to the overall increase in readers – the free business paper Cash Daily and the Sunday newspaper Südostschweiz am Sonntag, which has attracted 83,000 readers since its launch.
