Hard to measure
Goodwill was first defined in the late 19th century as the difference between the purchase price and the book value of an acquired company’s assets. Today it can also mean the difference between the combined company’s profits over normal earnings for a similar business. It is difficult to measure as it is based on future earnings, which have no certainty.
