Figures issued by the Federal Statistics Office on Friday show that the number of day trips had gone down since the most recent survey in 2003, but the number of trips with overnight stays had gone up.
Nearly half of the trips with overnight stays were to destinations inside Switzerland. In the past ten years the number of trips abroad has increased. The most popular destinations are Switzerland’s neighbours: Germany, France, Italy and Austria, in that order.
However, although people travelled abroad more in 2008, their foreign trips were shorter than they were in 2003.
Surveys on the travel behaviour of Swiss residents are carried out every five years.
