Ammann grounded in Innsbruck
Swiss ski jumper Simon Ammann suffered disappointment in the third leg of the Four Hills competition in Innsbruck, Austria, finishing in only 11th place.
The 20-year-old from St Gallen, who finished fifth and third in the two previous legs, was off the pace from the start. A jump of 122.5 metres left Ammann lying in eighth place after the first round.
He slipped further down the field after the second round, managing only 116 metres with his second attempt. The result leaves the Swiss in seventh place in the overall World Cup standings.
The overall winner of Friday’s event was Germany’s all-conquering Sven Hannawald, who registered a record-breaking leap of 134.5 metres in the first round. Second place went to Poland’s Adam Malysz, with Austria’s Martin Höllwarth coming third.
Hannawald has now won all three legs of the Four Hills tournament and stands two jumps away from making history. That chance will come in Bischofshofen, Austria, on January 6.
