Bellucci takes first ATP title at Swiss Open
Brazil's Thomaz Bellucci claimed his first ATP title on Sunday, defeating Andreas Beck of Germany at the Swiss Open tennis tournament.
Bellucci, who entered the tournament ranked 119th, took 89 minutes to beat Beck, ranked 51st, by a score of 6-4, 7-6 (7-2) in the resort of Gstaad.
The 21-year-old Bellucci had defeated Switzerland’s Stanislas Wawrinka, Igor Andreyev of Russia and Nicolas Kiefer of Germany en route to the final.
Top players including Roger Federer of Switzerland and Rafael Nadal of Spain did not play.
Bellucci had had to qualify for the clay-court tournament. He becomes the fifth first-time winner on the tour this season.
“I will not forget this week for the rest of my life,” the left-hander said.
The match, which was delayed 60 minutes by rain in the second set, was Bellucci’s second ATP final.
The win, which netted him $102,000 (SFr110,500), also puts him back into the top 100 for the first time in three months.
