Federer and Wawrinka clear first-round hurdle
Swiss tennis players Roger Federer and Stanislas Wawrinka, seeded two and 17 respectively, have both advanced to the second round of the French Open.
Roger Federer opened his quest for a fourth straight final at Roland Garros by beating Alberto Martin of Spain 6-4, 6-3, 6-2 on Monday.
“I didn’t have much trouble on my service games,” Federer said before leaving centre court. “I mixed up my shots well to finish it off.”
Wawrinka made harder work of Frenchman Nicolas Devilder, eventually winning 6-3, 5-7, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4.
In the women’s tournament, Swiss number 17 seed Patty Schnyder was upset on Monday by Ukrainian world number 60 Kateryna Bondarenko. The inconsistent 30-year-old Swiss, who reached the quarterfinal in Paris last year, lost 6-4, 6-3.
Switzerland’s last representative at Roland Garros, Timea Bacsinszky, beat Emilie Loit from France 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 on Sunday.
Top-seeded Rafael Nadal looked his usual dominant self on Monday, beating Marcos Daniel of Brazil 7-5, 6-4, 6-3 for his 29th straight win on the red clay at Roland Garros, bettering the mark held by Björn Borg, who won 28 on the trot from 1978-81.
