Switzerland’s Roger Federer has lost to Lleyton Hewitt of Australia in the final of the Gerry Weber Open in Germany.

Eighth-seeded Hewitt won the match 3-6, 7-6 (4), 6-4 in the final in Halle on Sunday.

After taking the first set 6-3, Hewitt broke early in the second set and won the tiebreaker, levelling the match. He went on to take the final set breaking Federer’s first service game.

Federer had breezed through the previous four rounds of the Wimbledon warm-up tournament without dropping a single set. He was chasing his sixth title there, having won his previous 29 matches at the tournament.

It is the first time Hewitt has beaten the former world number one in 16 matches. He was last victorious against Federer in 2003 at the Davis Cup in Melbourne.

“Roger is a hell of an opponent and everybody knows how good he is on the grass court. His record speaks for itself and I just got lucky”, said Hewitt later.
