Fifa reconsiders video technology

Fifa president Sepp Blatter has said the debate about using technology to help referees would be reopened following the mistakes in Sunday’s World Cup matches.

On Tuesday Blatter apologised to England and Mexico for the officiating errors that
occurred prior to their elimination from the tournament in South Africa.

Blatter said “it would be nonsense” for Fifa not to look again at video technology with its rule-making panel.

However, the refereeing system will not be changed midway through the World Cup. The International Football Association Board will begin considering changes at a July meeting in Cardiff.

England were denied a clear goal when Frank Lampard’s shot bounced down from the crossbar well over the goal line.

On the other hand Argentina’s first goal against Mexico was scored by Carlos Tevez, who was clearly offside.

In a separate development, Swiss referee Massimo Busacca, previously considered a candidate for the final, has been told he will not officiate any more matches. No reason was given, but Busacca had been criticised for giving a penalty against South Africa and for sending off their goalkeeper.
