H1N1 cases jump to eight

Three more cases of swine flu were confirmed in Switzerland on Friday, bringing the total number to eight.

The Federal Health Office said the first case on Friday involved a roughly 30-year-old woman in Bern who had returned from the Dominican Republic on May 23.

Later authorities in canton St Gallen said another young woman who had recently returned form the United States had picked up the infection.

Finally a 48-year-old woman, who had returned from New York, tested positive in canton Vaud.

The World Health Organization (WHO) said early on Friday that more than 15,500 cases of the new H1N1 flu had been reported in the world including 99 deaths, most of them in Mexico

The Federal Health Office said around a dozen cases were under investigation. Swine flu has so far been ruled out in 97 cases.
