Schnyder through first round in Canberra

Swiss tennis player Patty Schnyder has made it through the first round of the Canberra Women's Classic, defeating Rossana De Los Rios.

Schnyder only needed two sets to overcome the Paraguayan 6-4, 6-4. This was the third time in six months that the Swiss has beaten De Los Rios after victories at the US Open and the Pattaya tournament in Thailand.

Schnyder will face Greece’s Eleni Daniilidou for the first time in the second round.

In other tennis news, the women’s rankings confirmed Martina Hingis’ fourth place. American Lindsay Davenport remains number one.

Patty Schnyder is the second-best Swiss, with a 41st place. Emmanuelle Gagliardi is 65th, Marie-Gaiané Mikaelian 78th, while Miroslava Vavrinec is out of the top 100 with a 117th ranking.
