Federer makes it three in Qatar

Roger Federer has clinched the Qatar Open – the first ATP tennis tournament of the season - defeating defending champion Nikolay Davydenko 6-3, 6-4.

The Swiss star – world number two – proved too much for his Russian opponent and claimed a break of serve in each set to seal his triumph under floodlights in Doha.

“It is a great start to the new season. The wins here help me build my rhythm for Australia,“ Federer said.

It is the third time Federer has won the Doha event since 2005 and the 67th ATP tournament victory of his career.

Davydenko had beaten world number one Rafael Nadal in the semifinal on Friday.

The tournament in the Arab emirate came ten days ahead of the Australian Open, where Federer is to defend his only Grand Slam title of 2010.
