The seventh-seeded Gaudio struggled to cope with the Croat's powerful serve but finally pushed through to win the match 4-6, 6-4, 7-6.

Gaudio is seeking his third title of the season after winning back-to-back titles in Barcelona and Mallorca.

In the other semi-final of the day, two-time champion Alex Corretja of Spain, seeded eighth, faced 23-year-old Czech qualifier Radek Stepanek, in a match postponed by rain. Corretja is seeking to reach his first final of the season.

Gaudio's win marked his 20th victory in his last 22 matches on clay.
