Swiss tennis player Ivo Heuberger has been knocked out in the quarter-finals of the ATP tennis tournament in Rotterdam - ending his most successful run to date on the singles circuit.

Heuberger – who managed to reach the top eight after entering as a qualifier – was beaten 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 by Croatian Ivan Ljubicic.

The 26-year-old from the St Gallen town of Altstaetten caused a major upset in the opening round after beating former grand-slam winner Goran Ivanisevic, also from Croatia.

He then followed that unlikely win by blasting fancied un-seeded player Belgian Max Mirnyi with 13 aces, to win 7-6 (2), 6-2.

Federer also out

Swiss number one Roger Federer was unable to do any better than Heuberger on Friday. Seeded seventh at the Dutch tournament, Federer also went out in three sets – losing 6-3, 6-7, 5-7 to French world number 22 Nicolas Escudé.

The result was a virtual repeat of last year’s final in Rotterdam when Escudé emerged from the qualifying rounds to overcome the Swiss star, again in three sets.
