A new world champion

Switzerland chalked up a new success in orienteering on Saturday, when Daniel Hubmann won the overall world cup.

Hubmann, who is 25, was already long-distance champion. He beat the middle-distance champion, Thierry Gueorgiou, in the penultimate race of the season near Zurich, putting himself in an unbeatable position ahead of the final race on Sunday.

Hubmann is the first Swiss man to win the overall cup.

His success comes just a month after Switzerland’s best-known and most successful orienteering athlete, Simone Niggli-Luder, gave birth to a daughter.

Niggli-Luder has won a total of 14 world championships in her career.
