Swiss world tennis number one Roger Federer has beaten friend and Olympic doubles partner Stanislas Wawrinka 6-3, 7-6, 6-2 in the fourth round of the French Open.

It was the first time the two Swiss – the top-ranked defending champion and the 20th seed – met in a grand slam tournament.

“He’s really a good friend,” said Wawrinka before his first grand slam fourth-round match. “We know each other so well, so it’s never easy to play him, especially here in French Open. But then when you go on court, you try to do your job.”

Federer, who has yet to drop a set, is now 5-1 in the friendly rivalry.

He will now play fifth seed Robin Söderling. and agencies
