Federer, Wawrinka give Swiss Davis Cup lead
Switzerland has got off to fast start in its Davis Cup playoffs against Italy, with Roger Federer and Stanislas Wawrinka winning their first matches in Genoa.
Roger Federer disposed of 64th-ranked Simone Bolelli, 6-3, 6-4, 6-1, while Swiss number two and the 22nd-ranked Wawrinka also brought down his Italian opponent – Andreas Seppi (59th) – in three straight, 6-4, 6-1, 6-2.
Federer’s match was his first since his five-set loss to Juan Martin del Potro in the US Open final on Monday.
Federer and Wawrinka, the Olympic doubles champions, will team up against Fabio Fognini and Potito Starace on Saturday, with reverse singles scheduled for Sunday.
The winner of the best-of-five series will play in the World Group next year.
