The captain of the Swiss national football team, Alex Frei, has injured his ankle.

The accident occurred while Switzerland’s national team was training at Zurich’s Letzigrund Stadium on Wednesday.

Frei was trying to get the ball away from colleague Steve von Bergen, who was not hurt.

According to team doctor Cuno Wetzel, the Basel FC player has a bruised and sprained ankle.

The stroke of bad luck comes just days before the June 11 kick-off of the 2010 football World Cup in South Africa.

However Frei was cleared to fly to South Africa on Wednesday night.

Switzerland’s first match is scheduled against Spain on June 16.
