Swiss move up in peace index

Switzerland has been ranked 12th in a British survey of the most peaceful countries of the world.

Iceland, Denmark and Norway came top of the 140 countries, based on factors including military spending and respect for human rights.

The Global Peace Index, which is now in its second year, put Britain at position 49. The United States came 97th.

The Swiss improved their ranking from 14 to 12, just behind neighbouring Austria and Canada.

The index is the brainchild of an Australian businessman, Steve Killelea, and looks at variables from murder rates, to corruption and access to primary education.
