The Basel youth theatre troupe has won a DM20,000 (SFr15,000) prize at the German independent theatre festival, Impulse, in Cologne.

The troupe was rewarded for its staging of Israeli author Edna Mazya’s “Games in the Backyard”, directed by Sebastian Nübling. The central theme of the play is a tale of rape and the ensuing trial.

The play, with a cast of four actors and an actress, is divided into four phases. Each of the phases portrays a “victim versus victimizer” situation, and the roles of the cast vary accordingly, with the actress playing both victim and prosecutor.

Nine independent theatre groups from Germany and Switzerland took part in the Impulse festival, playing in Düsseldorf, Bochum, Mülheim and Cologne. This was the tenth edition of what is considered the most important German independent theatre festival.
