Federer (ATP 13), along with his playing partner girlfriend Miroslava Vavrinec, made an early exit from the Hopman Cup after losing to both Spain and host nation Australia. But he has been given the chance for some swift revenge against Robredo at least after being drawn against the world number 30 in the first round of the Sydney Open.

Hingis return

The Sydney tournament, which offers players an important warm-up for this month's Australian Open, will also see the return to action of Swiss women's number one Martina Hingis (WTA 4).

Having missed the end of last season thanks to an ankle injury which helped end her long reign as world number one, Hingis begins her fightback in the second round at Sydney where she will meet either Spain's Magui Serna (WTA 27) or America's Lisa Raymond (WTA 22).
