Green energy promoters seek financial boost

Environmentalists have called on parliament to increase efforts to promote renewable energy resources.

The group handed in a petition with more than 28,000 signatures aimed at boosting the annual credit to support projects for hydro- and geothermal power, photovoltaic panels, and wind and biomass energy.

The campaigners, which include Greenpeace and Swissolar, said more than 4,000 projects were blocked because government funding was limited to SFr250 million ($213 million).

The group, No More Nuclear Power Stations, is made up of a dozen non-governmental organisations and has the backing of the centre-left Social Democrats and the Green Party.

The country’s leading power companies have applied for licences to build three new nuclear plants. Switzerland presently has five nuclear power reactors.
