Leuthard calls for climate timetable

Swiss Environment Minister Doris Leuthard has called on the international community to create a timetable defining the steps to a comprehensive climate agreement.

She was speaking at the two-day Petersberg Climate Dialogue, which wraps up in Berlin on Monday. Some 35 leaders from around the world are there for the talks, which are being co-hosted by Germany and South Africa.

Emphasising Switzerland’s goal of achieving a comprehensive and legally binding international climate agreement, Leuthard said that the timetable should include the step-by-step integration of all states into the process.

The meeting identified four areas in need of progress: the financing of climate  measures in developing countries, the continuation of the Kyoto Protocol, the reduction of greenhouse gases by states not currently party to the Kyoto Protocol, and the transparent monitoring of the implementation of these commitments.

The next United Nations climate summit will be held in Durban, South Africa, from November 28 to December 9.
