Jet skis remain banned on lakes
The government has decided after all not to change the law to permit the use of pleasure craft known as jet skis on the country's lakes.
Cabinet plans to reclassify jet skis as sports boats, in line with European Union guidelines, sparked widespread opposition.
This would have paved the way for their use on Swiss lakes. However, the authorities in many cantons and environmental groups said they were opposed to the move.
Cabinet also agreed on Wednesday not to water down environmental standards for sports boats.
The changes to Swiss boating laws to be implemented will come into force on January 1, 2009. They concern mostly technical aspects and terminology.
