On form Federer reaches Wimbledon quarterfinal
Swiss tennis star Roger Federer defeated Swede Robin Söderling in straight sets on Monday to reach the Wimbledon quarterfinal.
Söderling, who lost to Federer in the French Open final in early June, was outclassed by the second seed, who won 6-4 7-6 (7-5) 7-6 (7-5).
“I think today was just a serving contest, not too many rallies,” Federer said afterwards.
“Today was hard to get through. Robin served great, thank god he served a double fault at the end of the tie-break because otherwise it could have been four sets.”
Söderling, who knocked out world number one Rafael Nadal at the French Open and is ranked 13th, has now played 11 matches against Federer and lost each one.
Federer will play the winner of a later match between Fernando Verdasco and Ivo Karlovic in Wednesday’s quarterfinal.
The world number two is bidding for his sixth Wimbledon championship and a record 15th major title overall. Defending champion Nadal was forced to pull out due to a knee injury.
