Romanian wins Swiss Open
Victor Hanescu of Romania has won the Swiss Open tennis championships in the alpine resort of Gstaad, clinching his first major tournament.
Hanescu earlier caused an upset by defeating Swiss number two Stanislas Wawrinka, a favourite for the title, in the semifinals.
The Romanian, ranked 80, beat seventh-seeded Igor Andreev of Russia, 6-3, 6-4 on Sunday.
Wawrinka, a finalist in 2005, has not won a tournament in two years despite reaching a number 10 ranking.
He suffered a further blow when he and compatriot Stéphane Bohli just lost out in the doubles final to the Czech-Slovak duo of Jaroslav Lewinsky and Filip Polasek 6-3, 2-6, 9-11.
