Samaritans help record number
The Samaritans say they dealt with 250,000 telephone or internet calls for help last year – a new record.
The national network, which offers a listening ear to those with personal problems, said on Tuesday this corresponded to 685 contacts per day.
The service was initially set up to help people with suicidal tendencies but now also deals with addictions, relationship crises or other serious problems. Almost three-quarters of callers are women.
By dialling 143 or sending an email to one of the regional websites, people can receive anonymous and confidential assistance.
The Samaritans employ 640 volunteers nationwide who are carefully selected and trained.
“Volunteers have to commit for a three-year period, be ready to work day and night and show utmost discretion,” said Andrea Weinhold, head of the St Gallen office.
The helpline is financed by private donations, membership subscriptions, and by its official partner, the Swiss telecommunications firm Swisscom.
