Wawrinka slides out of US Open
Swiss tennis player Stanislas Wawrinka is out of the US Open after losing to Mikhail Youzhny 3-6, 7-6 (7), 3-6, 6-3, 6-3.
Wawrinka started well in some sets but had to have his left thigh taped in the middle of the fourth.
Russia’s 12th seed Youzhny now goes on to play against top seed Rafael Nadal in the semifinal.
Meanwhile Roger Federer will meet third-seeded Novak Djokovic in the semifinals on Saturday.
Wawrinka, who is 25th seed, is an Olympic doubles gold medallist with Federer.
This was the first year that Wawrinka had reached the quarterfinal of a grand slam event.
