Cargo workers reject call to return to work
Striking rail employees in Bellinzona have decided to stay on the picket lines, one day after the transport minister urged for dialogue and a return to their jobs.
On Thursday, the union representing 430 employees at the Swiss Federal Railways Cargo site said its members would not return to work until their positions were guaranteed.
Transport Minister Mortiz Leuenberger had pushed for roundtable talks and suggested that the Railway’s controversial decision to close the Bellinzona plant would be revisited.
Union leader Gianni Frizzo indicated he was open to the government’s overtures, but that a return to work depended on job security for workers.
The union and Cargo are to meet again on Friday.
