Basel commuter line operating again after crash

Two people were injured when two trains collided near Olten train straion in northern Switzerland on Thursday Keystone

Train traffic remained interrupted on the major commuter line between Basel and Olten on Friday following a train collision on Thursday evening in which two people were injured.

The incident occurred around 6pm on Thursday near Olten station in northern Switzerland when two trains arriving and leaving within one minute of each other collided sideways.

The force of the collision caused the derailment of two wagons and the engine on one of the trains. One of the two drivers was airlifted to hospital with serious injuries.

Sections of the Basel-Olten line were reopened around 3pm on Friday, with Swiss Federal Railways warning that traffic would remain disrupted into the evening. 

Federal and cantonal police are investigating the cause of the accident, which was not immediately clear.
