City of Lausanne acts as magnet for visitors

Lausanne attracted thousands of visitors over the last few days as it celebrated its new underground railway, a music festival and the annual Comptoir Suisse fair.

The real magnet was the new railway which since its inauguration on Thursday pulled in more than 150,000 people wanting to try out Switzerland’s first fully-automated driverless system.

Despite a few teething problems, the steepest underground in Europe received positive echoes from near and far, with passengers even bursting into applause after their first journey.

Thousands of the visitors also visited the Label Suisse music festival, which featured rock group Gotthard on Friday evening (14,000) and singer-songwriter Stephan Eicher on Saturday(15,000).

Around 50,000 people were also in the western Swiss city at the weekend to visit the annual Comptoir Suisse autumn fair, a figure which far exceeded that of recent years.
