Post Office to axe 1,000 jobs
Switzerland's Post Office is preparing to cut its staff by 1,000 employees, in a bid to boost profits in the mail sector through automation.
At least eight mail sorting centres out of the current 20 will disappear, said François Tissot-Daguette, the company spokesman, confirming a report from the Sunday paper, “SonntagsZeitung”.
“We are studying the various possibilities we have,” said the spokesman. “But the restructuring will cost 1,000 jobs, no matter which path we follow.”
The first mail sorting centre is expected to close in 2005, with others following until 2009. Most jobs cuts will concern voluntary departures or retirements.
The Swiss Post Office employs 55,000 people, of which around 20,000 are active in the mail sector.
