Rail travellers on track to surf the net
First class passengers on Swiss Federal Railways trains will now be able to connect more easily to the internet while travelling.
Swisscom, the country’s largest communication services provider, said on Monday that it had equipped 75 coaches in Intercity trains with wireless base stations.
The high-speed Intercity trains travel between the country’s main cities, including Geneva, Zurich and Bern, the capital.
Existing Swisscom mobile and broadband customers will be able to access the service for SFr4 ($4)an hour, the company said in a statement. It added that the charge would be billed in 15-minute increments.
Those people not with Swisscom can use the service at higher rates.
Swisscom is majority owned by the Swiss state.
