Swiss air traffic reverts to normal
Traffic in Swiss airports was back to normal by midday on Monday after concern about volcanic ash from Iceland grounded some flights at the weekend.
The low cost carrier easyJet, which had cancelled all flights to and from Geneva on Sunday, scrapped its ban on Monday.
However, the Geneva airport spokesman told the Swiss News Agency that a knock-on effect meant that there had been some delays and cancellations to early morning flights.
A spokesman for Swiss International Air Lines said no flights had been cancelled on Monday, but transatlantic flights were subject to delays of up to six hours because they were forced to take long detours to avoid the ash cloud.
Another cloud of volcanic particles could reach Switzerland on Wednesday.
The Swiss authorities are monitoring the situation closely, along with neighbouring countries, a Federal Civil Aviation Office spokesman told the Swiss News Agency.
The eruption of the same Eyjafjöll volcano last month paralysed flights over much of Europe for several days. Volcanic ash can do serious damage to aircraft engines, causing planes to crash.
The volcano started emitting ash clouds again on Thursday. On this occasion they have spread over the Atlantic and mainly affected some airports in south western Europe.
