Swiss tooth is sweeter than ever
The Swiss are biting into more chocolate than ever before, according to the Union of Swiss Chocolate Manufacturers, Chocosuisse.
Statistics published on Friday reveal that the Swiss consumed on average 12.3 kilograms of chocolate per person during 2001.
The figures represent a year-on-year increase of 400 grammes per person.
“Swiss chocolate is becoming more and more popular at home as well as abroad,” said Chocosuisse in its annual review of the state of the national chocolate industry.
Worldwide consumption
Exports of Swiss chocolate to more than 130 countries around the world also rose by 10 per cent during the first eight months of 2001.
Germany remains the biggest overseas market for the domestic chocolate industry, with a 25 per cent share of annual exports.
The British also seem partial to a bar or two of chocolate from Switzerland, with 11 per cent of exports destined for the UK market.
The 17 chocolate manufacturers, which collectively make up Chocosuisse, produced in excess of 140,000 tons of chocolate during 2001, an increase of 2.1 per cent on the previous year’s output.
