The French-speaking Swiss, ranked 96th in the ATP table, held on for 70 minutes before dropping the match 3-6, 2-6, to the 20th-ranked Lapentti.

Speaking after the match, the 25 year-old Bastl said: "I tried repeatedly to go on the offensive, but he was always in control."

He added: "I'm not too disappointed; it was a good test."

Bastl had defeated America's Jeff Tarango to reach the second round.

Next week, the Swiss Davis Cup player will be taking part in a tournament in Basel on a wild card.

Meanwhile, his compatriot, Marc Rosset, has been defeated 7-6, 6-7, 7-6 by Carlos Moya of Spain in the second round of the Toulouse Grand Prix.
