Cabinet sets foreign trade priorities

The Swiss government has decided that the country should continue with its policy of opening its economy to the outside world.

It has approved the foreign trade report for 2007, which emphasised international competitiveness and the World Trade Organization (WTO).

This policy, in which the other main points are relations with the European Union and bilateral accords, will be continued into 2008, said a government statement.

Despite little progress being made with the Doha round of negotiations last year, the WTO will continue to play an important role for Switzerland, it added.

In terms of the EU, extending bilateral accords with Bulgaria and Romania and tax issues will top the list, as well as finding new areas for cooperation.

The government expects free trade negotiations with Japan to be concluded this year and talks with India to begin.
