Leuenberger gives green light for round table

Transport Minister Mortiz Leuenberger has said the conditions are right for roundtable talks to end a strike in the cargo unit of Swiss Federal Railways.

Leuenberger was speaking on Saturday in Bern after discussions with leaders of the cargo division, unions and politicians.

He said Federal Railways would recommend its board of directors to withdraw restructuring plans at a locomotive maintenance depot in Bellinzona, southern Switzerland.

For its part, the strike committee would recommend workers to end their four-week-long protest.

The conflict followed an announcement by Federal Railways that it would axe over 400 jobs at the loss-making unit – 126 of them in Italian-speaking Bellinzona.

The restructuring plans came after the unit lost SFr190 million ($185.73 million) in 2007.
