Oerlikon gets rid of Blu-ray business
Technology firm Oerlikon has sold its Blu-ray business unit to Germany's Singulus, the group said on Friday.
"Oerlikon is continuing to pursue its portfolio strategy and (is) parting company with what is a comparatively small, volatile segment for the group," the company said in a statement.
Blu-ray is one of two competing and incompatible high-definition video formats available to consumers. Specialists have recently stated that it has - for all intents and purposes - won the format war with HD-DVD.
Oerlikon, whose shareholders include Russian billionaire Viktor Vekselberg, had developed Blu-ray disc production lines and controlled around 30 per cent of the worldwide market.
No financial details were disclosed. Employees who have not made the move to Singulus have joined Oerlikon's solar power division.
