Despite the growing popularity of online services, including text messaging and social media websites like Facebook, the Swiss Post said it expects only a two per cent decrease in the number of letters handled in 2010.
There had been a 4.9 per cent drop in 2009 compared to the previous year, and some officials have forecast a 30 per cent decline by 2015.
The Swiss Post also said it transported 15 million parcels between December 1 and 24 this year, which also represented a doubling compared to the average for a similar period in 2010.
This Christmas the Swiss set a new record for the amount of text messages sent. The three main mobile phone operators, Swisscom, Orange and Sunrise, reported that 73.6 million were sent on December 24 and 25 – a seven per cent rise on 2009.
