Stock exchange closes on positive note

The Swiss stock exchange has begun the week with a slight gain.

The Swiss Market Index of leading blue chip companies closed at 6,216.46 points, up 1.92 per cent on Friday's close.

The biggest winner of the day was Syngenta whose shares rose by 6.2 per cent to SFr173 ($150.17).

Meanwhile banks had varied performances, with Credit Suisse shares rising by 2.89 per cent to SFr49.9 and UBS falling by 0.88 per cent to SFr18.

Pharmaceutical giant Novartis closed down 0.3 per cent at SFr59.35 despite an announcement of "solid" results for the first nine months of 2008.

Share prices on the London Stock Exchange closed 5.41 per cent higher while Frankfurt's DAX index ended 1.12 per cent above Friday.
