Zug is top location, while Jura comes last

Zug is still the most attractive canton for companies and individuals, according to the latest locational quality indicator published by Swiss bank Credit Suisse.

The canton in central Switzerland, best known for its low taxes, finished ahead of Zurich, followed by Nidwalden. Obwalden came in fourth in the ranking, improving nine places since the annual index was relaunched in 2004.

Altogether four cantons from central Switzerland – Schwyz is sixth – are in the top six, a result that reflects the attractiveness of the area say the bank’s analysts.

Cantons such as Geneva (fifth) and Basel City (eighth) also have above average rankings because of their central position, accessibility and the number of highly qualified professionals.

Jura and Neuchâtel fared worse in the survey, a result reflected by the fact that their topography is difficult and that they are not close to major Swiss and foreign centres.

Regions within cantons often fared worse too, lacking attractiveness when compared with other areas. The Bernese Oberland for example received a far lower score than more central areas.

The indicator is compiled using data from 2,700 Swiss communities, including tax rates, education, available human resources and accessibility.
